Chapter 9 Vocab Key Terms

A-line | Arterial-line - catheter placed in an artery, most commonly the radial artery; provides accurate and continuous measurement of a patients blood pressure & other purposed |
analyte | Substance undergoing analysis or being measured |
AV shunt/fistula/graft | Permanent surgical fusion of an artery & vein that is created to provide easier access for dialysis patients |
bariatric | Pertaining to the treatment of obesity |
basal state | Resting state of the body in the early morning after a 12 hour fast |
bilirubin | A yellow bile pigment that is the product of the breakdown of RBCs by the body |
CVAD | Central Vascular Access Device - aka indwelling line, consists of tubing inserted into a main vein or artery |
CVC | Central Venous Catheter - aka central venous line; device used to aid in collecting blood specimens |
diurnal/circadian | Happening daily/having a 24-hour cycle |
edema | Swelling due to abnormal accumulation of fluid in the tissue |
exsanguination | Blood loss to the point of where life cannot be sustained |
hematoma | Swelling or mass of blood caused leaking from a blood vessel following venipuncture |
hemoconcentration | Decreased blood fluid & increase in nonfilterable components such as red blood cells |
hemolysis | Destruction of RBCs & release of hemoglobin into blood fluid |
iatrogenic | Term used to describe an adverse condition brought on by the effects of treatment |
icteric | Term used to describe a specimen marked by jaundice; used to describe serum, plasma, or urine specimen that have an abnormally deep-yellow to yellow-brown color due to high bilirubin levels |
implanted port | Small chamber attached to an indwelling line that is surgically implanted under the skin usually in the upper chest or arm |
IV | Intravenous - within or pertaining to the inside of a vein |
jaundice | Condition characterized by increased bilirubin in the blood; aka icteric |
lipemic | Term used to describe serum or plasma that has a milky look (cloudy white) or turbid due to high lipid content |
lymphedema | Swelling caused by impaired lymph flow |
lymphostasis | Stoppage or obstruction of normal lymph flow |
mastectomy | Surgical breast excision or removal |
normals | Another name for references ranges |
obese | Extremely overweight |
occluded | Obstructed; as in a vein that is hardened or clotted |
petechiae | Tiny, nonraised red or purple spots on a patients skin upon tourniquet application; tiny minute drops of blood that escape capillaries, as a result of capillary wall defects or platelets abnormalities |
PICC | Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter |
postural pseudoanemia | Physiologic response to a change in postion from standing to lying down; could be mistaken for blood loss or acute anemia |
preexamination/preanalytical | Prior to analysis; phase of the testing process begins in the lab when a test is ordered & ends when testing begins |
reference range/interval | A range of normal laboratory test values with high & low limits for healthy individuals |
reflux | Backflow of blood into a patients vein from the collection tube during venipuncture |
saline lock | Catheter with a stopcock or cap for delivering medication; periodically flushed with saline or heparin to prevent clotting |
sclerosed | Hard, cordlike, & lacking resilience |
syncope | Medical term for fainting; loss of consciousness & postural tone resulting from insufficient blood flow to the brain |
thrombocytopenia | Low platelet count |
thrombosed | Clotted, or denoting a vessel containing a clot |
turbid | Term used to describe cloudy serum or plasma due to high lipid levels |
VADs | Vascular-Access Device - special tubing & other devices used to access veins or arteries |
vasovagal | Relating to the action of a vagus nerve on blood vessels |
venous stasis | Stagnation or stoppage of the normal blood flow |
