TermDefinition
Culture the socially transmitted behaviors patterns, beliefs, values, customs arts, and all other characteristics of people that guide their views the world (worldview)
Value a principle or standard that has meaning or worth to an individual
Belief something that a person accepts as true
Practice a set of behaviors that one followings (praying before meals)
Cultural sensitivity knowing culturally appropriate language and not making statements that may offend another persons cultural belief
Cultural awareness focuses on history and ancestry and emphasizes an appreciation for attention to a cultures arts, music, crafts, celebrations, foods, and traditional clothing
Cultural competence refers to skills and knowledge required to provide effective nursing care
Ethnocentrism the tendency to think that our cultures way of thinking, acting, and believing are the only right and natural way.
Acculturation when people immigrate to a new country gradually accepting the new country through a learning process. learning to accept their own beliefs as well as the new country
Cultural assimilation when a new member takes on the dominant culture's values, beliefs, and practices, sometimes at the cost of losing some of his/her own cultural heritage
Cultural conflict when a person own culture conflicts with a new culture
Cultural shock when values, beliefs, and practices sanctioned by the new culture are very different from the ones of the native culture
Spirituality the essence of being; it gives meaning and purpose to our existence
Biological Variations refer to ways in which people are different from one another physiologically and genetically
