Directional Terms, Anatomic Nomenclature, and Points of Reference

TermDefinition
Anatomic Nomenclature System of names for anatomic structures
Anterior Front of an area in relation to the body
Posterior Back of an area in relation to the body
Ventral Directed towards the front
Dorsal Directed towards the back
Superior A part is above another part, or closer to the head
Inferior A part is below another part, or toward the feet
Apex Tip
Midsagittal Plane Divides the body into equal right and left halves
Sagittal Planes Divides the body into R/L, parallel to the midsagittal plane
Coronal/Frontal Plane Divides the body vertically to anterior/posterior parts
Transverse/Axial Plane Divides the body horizontally into superior and inferior parts
Median Middle or midline of the body
Medial Area closest to the median, towards the midline
Mesial Surface of the tooth that is towards the front of the mouth
Distal (teeth) Surface of the tooth that is away form the median (near the back)
Lateral HELLLLOOOOOOOOO
Proximal Near point of origin
Distal Furthest from origin
Contralateral A structure on the opposite side of the body
Superfiical Towards the surface
Deep Inward/away form the surface
Internal Inner side of wall of a hollow structure
External Outer side of wall of a hollow structure
Midsagittal Section Division by the midsagittal plane
Sagittal Section Division by any sagittal plane
Coronal/Frontal Section Division by any coronal/frontal plane
Transverse/Axial Section Division by any transverse/axial plane
Lingual Part or surface closest to the tongue
Midline Vertical line between your two front/bottom teeth (Middle of the mouth)
Occiusal Biting surfaces of the premolar to molar tooths (Top of the tooth)
Incisal Biting edge of the front teeth
Buccal Outer surface of the tooth opposite of the cheek
Labial Surface/side of the teeth closest to the lip
Facial Surface that faces the cheek/lip
