Basics of identifying plants (will update regularly)

Alternate plants? Oaks, Hickories, Sweetgum, Tuliptree
Opposite plants? Maple, Ash, Dogwood, Horse Chester
White Oaks vs Red Oaks both simple alt. leaves White: rounded lobes Red: pointed lobes
White oaks White oak and overcup oak
Red oaks southern red: pointed lobes, usually 3, round base Willow: strap-like point leaves Water: shorter leaves than willow, blunt spatulate tip, ocasionally lobed
Hickories compound alt. leaves, ash lookalike
Sweetgum spikey fruit ball, maple lookalike, simple alt leaves.
Tuliptree 4 large lobes, symmetrical, flowers tulip like,
Sugar Maple 5 large lobe, smooth edges, larger leaves
Red Maple 3 lobes, sometimes 2 smaller, serrated edge, red petiole (leaf connection)
Dogwoods simple opp. leaves, ovate leaves, veins bend to tip
Ashes compound opp. leaves, leaflets more sim. size than hickory
