Tissue Definitions
Crash Course Tissue #1 (nervous & muscle)
Question | Answer |
---|---|
What are the purposes of nervous tissues? | To provide control & communication |
What are the purposes of muscle tissues? | To provide movement. They can also contact, which is super handy for everyday tasks |
What are the purposes of Epithelial Tissues? | To line, cover, & protect the body |
What is the purpose of connective tissue? | To provide support |
Histology definition | Study of tissues |
What is the purpose of staining & dying cells? | To make them more visible & have more variation under microscopes |
Basic nervous tissues carry out what function? | Sensing stimuli & sending electrical impulses |
What cells make up nervous tissues? | Neurons & glial cells |
What are neurons? | Cells that conduct the electrochemical nerve impulses that let you do anything |
What 3 parts make up neurons? | The cell body, the dendrites, & the axon |
What is the cell body of a neuron? | The neurons life support. It contains everything a normal cell would; a nucleus, mitochondria, and DNA |
What are the dendrites of a neuron? | They look like the trees they're named after & collect signals from other cells to send back to the soma. They are the listening end of a neuron. |
What is the axon of a neuron? | A long rope-like part that acts as the transmission cable. It carries messages to other neurons, and muscles, and glands |
What are the purpose of glial cells? | The act as the neuron's pit crew, providing support, insulation, & protection, and tethering them to blood vessels |
What does the term "well-vascularized" mean? | It means that there is a lot of blood coming & going |
What types of muscles tissues are there? | Skeletal, cardiac, & smooth |
What is the purpose of skeletal muscle? | It's what attaches to all the bones in your skeleton, supporting you & keeping your posture in line |
The term "striations" refers to what? | A striped appearance |
What is the purpose of cardiac muscle tissue? | It forms the walls of your heart & its regular contractions are what makes blood pump through your circulatory system |
Where is cardiac muscle found? | In the heart (its only found in the heart) |
Where is smooth muscle tissue found? | It lines the walls of most of your blood vessels and hollow organs |
Why is smooth muscle tissue called smooth muscle tissue? | Because it lacks striations and are arranged to form tight-knit sheets |
