acute respiratory distress syndrome

symptoms of ARDS | tachypnea, tachycardia, change in mental status, decreased FRC, respiratory alkalosis, elevated temperature and diaphoresis, worsening chest x-ray that progresses to white out, eventual extreme hypoxia (hallmark sign) |
treatment | treat the cause oxygenation and ventilation - positive end expiratory pressure decrease anxiety and decrease pain rotoprone bed adequate nutrition |
medications for ARDS | corticosteroids, surfactant, vasodilators, anticoagulants |
patho of ARDS | initial insult - systemic inflammatory response syndrome --release of inflammatory mediators - damage to alveolar capillary membrane --> increased capillary permeability --> pulmonary edema -microatelectasis -decreased compliance and decreased surfactant |
