Boarding School | A school Native American children were sent to live at, away from their families to learn English and American culture. |
Covered Wagon | A cart pulled by oxen that American settlers traveled west in, |
Dawes Act | A law that gave the U.S. government control over all Native American Lands. Gave Native Americans individual property if they agreed to farm it and live in one place. |

Gold Rush 1849 | When gold was found in the mountains of California causing many Americans to travel west. |
Homestead Act | A law that promised free land in the west to American settlers if they agreed to live on the land and farm it for 7 years. |
Indian Reorganization Act | A law that organized tribal governments into American town-style governments, rather than their traditional governments. |
Manifest Destiny | The idea that it is the United States’ destiny to spread from the east coast to the west coast. |
Mexican American War | A war between the U.S. and Mexico that resulted in the U.S. gaining control of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, parts of California, Utah, Nevada, and Colorado. |
Native Americans (indigenous) | The original people living in North America and South America. |
Reservation (Native Americans) | A piece of land Native American tribes were forced to live on. Usually away from their original homelands. |
Resistance | To go against. |
Settlers | Americans who traveled west into parts of North America not controlled by the U.S. to try to set up farms, towns and cities |
Sioux Wars | Conflict between the U.S. government and Sioux tribe over land in South Dakota after gold was discovered there. |
Territory | An area that is controlled by a country, but not officially a part of that country. |
Transcontinental Railroad | A railroad built in 1869 connecting the eastern U.S. to the west coast. This made travel to the west faster and safer. |
Treaty | An agreement between two groups for peace, trade, or surrender. |
