335 Schizophrenia

schizophrenia | disturbances, thought processes, perception, affect and behavior result in severe deterioration of functioning |
psychosis | disorganization of the personality, deterioration of social functioning and loss of contact or distortion of reality |
hallucinations | false sensory perception not associated with real external stimuli |
delusions | fixed, false beliefs |
catatonia | significant motor disturbance that may range from stupor to excessive motor activity and agitation |
delusional disorder | presence of delusions that have been experienced for at least 1 month |
brief psychotic disorder | sudden onset of psychotic symptoms that may have been preceded by a psychosocial stressor |
substance and medication induced psychotic disorder | delusions or hallucinations predominant after intoxication, withdrawal or exposure |
schizophreniform disorder | duration of schizophrenia is at least 1 month but less than 6 |
schizoaffective disorder | depression or mania, may appear depressed with psychomotor retardation and suicidal ideation; euphoria, grandiosity or hyperactivity |
positive symptoms | delusions, hallucinations, disorganized thinking |
tangentiality | client speaks about unrelated topics, focus of discussion is lost |
grandiosity | belief that they have exceptional greatness |
circumstantiality | delay in reaching the point of communication due to insertion of unnecessary details |
echolalia | repeats words said by others |
perseveration | repeats words said by others |
waxy flexibility | allows body parts to be placed in bizarre or uncomfortable positions for long periods |
negative symptoms | lack of expression, decreased motivation to complete activities, decreased communication, diminished ability for abstract thinking, lack of personal hygeine |

chlorpromazine | typical antipsychotic, also used to treat migraines |

prodromal phase | deterioration in role functioning and social withdrawal, sleep disturbance, poor concentration, perceptual abnormalities |
