1846 War with Mexico. Culmination of Manifest Destiny with southwest lands added.
1920 19th Amendment added. Women get the right to vote.
1776 Declaration of Independence written by Thomas Jefferson
1803 Louisiana Purchase under Jefferson administration. Originally planed to purchase just new orleans, but Napolean sold the entire frech western lands at a cheap price. US is doubled in size as expansion fever begins.
1783 The revolution ends with the Treaty of Paris which provided the recognition of the United States as a new nation.
1619 First African Americans in the colonies. Begining of the Slave trade and sectional problems for the country.
1788 The constitution is established. New government established as the Articles of Confederation fails.
1868 14th amendment gurantees equal protection of the laws
1869 1st Transcontinental Railroad. Nations size becomes more practical and asian becomes more important.
1945 United Nations is formed. US central figure in teh 2nd attempt at a world peace keeping organization
1945 Brown vs Board of Education. Court case sparks the modern civil rights movement
1898 Spanish-American War. US becomes an imperilist power.
1939 WWII begins
1933 FDR's New Deal begins. FDR';s response to the depression changes the country forever
1964 Tonkin Gulf Resolution. US begins major escalation of involvement in Vietnam.
1929 Stock market crashes. A symtom of the problems leading to the Great Depression.
1791 Bill of Rights is added to the constitution. The first 10 amendments to the constitution gurantee individual liberties.
1607 Jamestown founded. First permanent english settlement in North America.
1914 WWI begins. The war to end all wars
1941 US enters WWII because of the japaense attack on Pearl Harbor.
1917 US enters WWI as attempts at neautrality fail
1861 Civil war begins. sectional strife finally leads to a 4 year war, slavery is just on issue
