Vocabulary for Westward Expansion

Abolitionist | a person who wanted to do away with slavery in the Union |
Slave Codes | laws enacted in the South that took away nearly all the rights of slaves by regulating their actions |
Antebellum | before the Civil War |
Free State | a state that did not allow slavery |
Slave State | a state that allowed slavery |
Secession | the act of pulling out of the Union |
Republican Party | a political party formed in 1854 to oppose slavery |
Democratic Party | people who were in the Kansas Nebraska area that supported slavery |
Compromise of 1850 | legislation passed by Congress by which California entered the Union as a free state, slave trading was ended in DC. |
Compromise of 1850 - continued | Then Texas gave up its claims to New Mexico in exchange for money, residents of the territories of New Mexico and Utah would be able to determine whether they wanted slavery (popular sovereignty), and a stronger Fugitive Slave Act was enacted |
Confederate States of America | the name given to the government formed by the southern states that seceded from the Union in the early 1860s |
Fugitive Slave Act | law requiring states to return runaway slaves to their owners |
