4.4 Defining Political Boundaries

boundary an invisible barrier or line that separates one state from another
demarcated boundary a boundary marked with a physical object ex. signs, fences
geometric boundary boundary defined by a straight line that goes along with the lines of latitude and longitude ex. border between saudi arabia and iraq, border between U.S. and canada
antecedent boundary borders that have been established before there was major settlement by people in an area ex. U.S. and canada, argentina and chile
relic boundary border that no longer exists, but has left an imprint on the local cultural or environmental geography. ex. east and west germany during the cold war, the iron curtain, the confederacy and the union during the civil war
superimposed boundary border that is drawn over existing and accepted borders by an outside force ex. the berlin conference to africa, india and pakistan
subsequent boundary border that are drawn in areas that have been settled by people, typically due to changes that have occurred over time. ex. boundaries in Europe
consequent boundary type of subsequent boundary: takes into account the existing cultural distribution of people living in the territory and redevelops boundary lines to more closely align with cultural boundaries
frontier A zone of territory where no state has governing authority frontiers on the Arabian peninsula
