Indus River The main river along the western side of India that provided massive amounts of silt for the civilizations (Harappan)
Ganges River The main river on the northeastern side of India that was sacred to the Indian civilization.
Silt the rich soil left behind after the rivers flooded. This provided great farmlands for India
Monsoon A strong seasonal wind that brings heavy rainfall to India every summer
Subcontinent A large area of land that is separated from the larger continent
Himalayan and Hindu Kush Mountains Natural defenses which protects India from invader
Polytheism The belief in many gods
Monotheism The belief in only one god
Harrapan Empire The empire which developed two main cities with grid-patterned streets and indoor plumbing. Their culture remains much of a mystery since we have not yet translated their language.
Aryan Empire The empire which brought the Sanskrit language to Ancient India
Mauryan Empire The empire that prospered under Asoka and the religion of Buddhism
Chandragupta Maurya Original ruler of the Mauryan empire. He developed a strong military after Alexander the Great invaded India.
Buddhism The Indian religion that focused on The 4 Noble Truths, The 8 Fold Path, karma, and reincarnation in hopes of reaching nirvana.
Karma The good or bad actions a person builds up based on how a person lives their life
Nirvana the perfect state of peace which was sought after by Buddhists
Siddhartha Gautama The founder of Buddhism
Gupta Empire The empire in which India became reunified, prosperous, and returned to Hinduism. This was the Golden Age of math and sciences for Ancient India.
Chandra Gupta The ruler of the Gupta empire who brought Hinduism back to Ancient India
Hinduism The Indian religion that focused on karma and reincarnation in hopes of moving up the caste system in order to be reunited with Brahman.
Caste System The Hindu system that a person was born into and could not change.
The 4 levels 1 Brahmins- Priests/Religious leaders 2 Kshatriyas- Warriors and rulers 3 Vaishyas- Farmers, Traders, Merchants 4 Shudras- Laborers
Untouchables The class that was not included in the caste system because they were
Reincarnation In India, the idea of passing through many lives to be united with Brahman or to find Nirvana.
Vedas The large body of religious texts said to be the oldest scriptures of Hinduism. These were written in Sanskrit.
Dharma The divine law that requires people to perform the duties of their caste
Brahman In Hinduism, the universal spirit, or creator
