Ark of the Covenant | the sacred container that holds the tablets of the 10 Commandments. |
What does the Ark of the Covenant symbolize? | it symbolizes God's presence to the Jewish people. |
Ecumenism | the promotion of cooperation and unity among Christians. |
Eucharistic Liturgy | public prayer and worship of the Church, where the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Jesus. Also called the Mass of the Eucharist. |
Evangelization | sharing our faith in Jesus with others through words and actions. It is the right and duty of every baptized Christian. |
Holy of Holies | the most sacred tool in Solomon's Temple that contains the Ark of the Covenant. |
Holy Spirit | the 3rd person of the Trinity. Eternal like the Father and the Son, inspired the Sacred Scripture, completes Jesus' work through the Church, brings grace to us through the sacraments. |
Incarnation | Jesus, the divine Son of God, became man in order to save us from sin. Jesus is both true God and true man, like us except sin. |
Laity | from the Greek word for people. In Greek- lentos. They are non-ordained members of the Church. |
Magisterium | teaching office of the Church made up of the bishops and the pope who interpret scripture and make judgements on tradition. |
Pentecost | descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles 50 days after Easter. It marks the BEGINNING of the Church. |
Marks of the Church | the 4 traits of the Church= one, holy, catholic, and apostolic. |
Mark of the Church: One | there is only ONE Church, and we are called to be unite in Christ. |
Mark of the Church: Holy | the Church is divine. It is a gift from God. |
Mark of the Church: catholic | the Church is universal. The same beliefs, liturgy, scripture, and traditions are shared throughout the world. |
Mark of the Church: Apostolic | Jesus gave authority to the Apostles, the first bishops of the Church. We can trace the succession of today's Church all the way back to its beginnings with Peter (the first Pope). |
Holy Orders | One of the 7 sacraments. It continues the mission of the Church by giving a man the grace and spiritual power to serve others and bring other the sacraments. |
3 Degrees of Holy Orders | 1. Deacon 2. Priest 3. Bishop |
Blessing and Adoration | a prayer that calls down God's blessing upon us or recognizing Almighty God and worship Him. |
Praise | a prayer where we express our delight in God and rejoice in our hearts because He exists and is good. |
Thanksgiving | a prayer that expresses our gratitude to God. The greatest prayer of Thanksgiving is the Eucharist, which means "thanksgiving" in Greek. |
Petition | a prayer asking for God's help for OURSELVES. |
Intercession | a prayer asking for God's help for OTHERS. We also ask saints to intercede on our behalf. |
Vocal way of praying | spoken prayer with others or alone. |
Meditation way of praying | praying in silence and stillness to help us in holy listening to communicate with God. |
Contemplation way of praying | praying by using our minds and hearts and sometimes imagination to recognize God's presence and six our gaze on Him. |
