(384-322 BC) Believed in a god like figure. In order to become truly happy, you must become perfect. Came up with rhetorical devices. Hierchical order of the inamiate, (Vegitative, Animals, Rational, and God). Belived a wise king is the best form of gov. Aristotle
(Born 571 BC). Chinese philosopher. Believed that everyone should live in balance with the tao or universe. Believed that we should "go with the flow." Founded a religion. Lao-Tzu
(1632-1677) Dutch philosopher. God is infinite and present in all things. All things are modes of god. Was kicked out of Amsterdam by the Jewish community. Believed in a rational desire of self interest. Wrote Ethics. Baruch Spinoza
(1788-1860), German, Wrote the word as will and representation. Sees the world as a manifestation of blind will. The first famous pessimist. Arthur Schopenhauer
Died in 394 BC. Teacher of Plato. Had 3 Principles: Know who you are, care for your soul, and a good person can't be harmed by others. "All people have full knowledge of truth" Believed that people are naturally good. Socrates
Student of Socrates. Our world is a flawed representation of the perfect ideal (The Forms). Wrote the republic. Popularized the philosopher king. Also wrote about the trial and death of Socrates. Plato
(1225-1274) Dominican friar and monk. Believed that science and religion coexist. Gave five proofs of god's existence. Wrote the Summa Theologica and the Summa contra Gentiles. St. Thomas Aquinas
(1813-1855) Dutch philosopher. Believed in free will, self expression and the human experience. Believed that despair and anxiety were a part of life. Considered the Father of Existentialism (free will). Soren Kierkegaard
(Around 1000 BC). Iranian prophet. Influenced Plato and Pythagaras. Founded the earliest monothestic religion which is named after him. Follow the Three-Fold Path: Good Thoughts, Good Words and Good Deeds. Zoroaster
(551-479 BC) Chinese philosopher of the Spring and Autumn period. The most important of his teachings include humaneness, righteousness, propriety/ritual, and human nature. Has a religion named after him. Confucius
