Local Antifungals: Aftate, Tinactin (tolnaftate); Monistat (miconazole); Nystatin | inhibits production of substance that maintains fungal cell membranes; may cause itching rash; wear gloves when applying |
Scabicides and Pediculocides: Elimite Cream (permethrin) | destroy parasites; may cause skin irritation; may require repeat application in 7-10 days |
Topical Anti-inflammatory Steroids: Cordran (flurandrenolide) | reduce inflammation; treat dermatitis, psoriasis, eczema; may cause burning, itching, dry skin; use gloves |
Antipruritics and Local Anesthetics: Caladryl lotion (calamine) | relieve itching and pain; may cause itching, redness, edema; monitor for inflammation and infection |
Protectants: Vaseline (petrolatum); Desitin (Vitamin A & D ointment) | prevent skin irritation; sunburn protection; may cause skin irritation |
Debridement Medications (NOT GIVEN BY QMA) | destruction of necrotic tissue; licensed personnel only |
Ophthalmic Antibiotics: Bacitracin | kills bacteria entering eye; may cause burning, irritation, rash, hypersensitivity |
Ophthalmic Preparations (lower pressure in eye): Timoptic (timolol maleate) | decreases intraocular pressure; treat glaucoma; may cause burning, irritation, rash, confusion, night blindness, blurred vision; monitor for increased BP and HR; best given at HS |
Ophthalmic Preparations (reduce inflammation, infection, edema in eye): Voltaren | reduces inflammation, infection, edema in eye; may cause burning, irritation, rash |
Ophthalmic Preparations (Miotics): Pilocar (pilocarpine HCL) | decrease eye pressure in glaucoma; monitor BP; best given at HS |
Ophthalmic Preparations (Mydriatics): atropine sulfate | dilate pupil; may cause dry mouth, blurred vision, burning, irritation, reduced HR and BP, confusion |
Eye Lubricants | soothe and lubricate dry eyes |
Ear Medications: Cortisporin Otic; neomycin, polymyxin | relieve pressure; reduce inflammation, infection, and congestion in ear; may cause irritation and itching |
Ear Medications (wax control agents): Debrox; carbamide peroxide | soften and dissolve ear wax; may cause redness and itching; irrigation to remove wax must be done by licensed nurse |
