Cardiovascular Meds

QMA

TermDefinition
Cardiotonics: Lanoxin, Lanoxicap (digoxin) improve contraction of heart muscle leading to increased circulation; slows and strengthens heart; may see halos around visual images; check pulse before giving (do not give if under 60)
Anti-arrhythmics: Pacerone (amiodarone) slows conduction of electrical impulses to regulate heart rate/rhythm; treats angina and arrhythmias; give 1 hr before or 2 hrs after meals with full glass of water; check pulse routinely
Anti-hypertensives (beta-adrenergic blockers/beta blockers): Catapres (clonidine HCL); Aldomet (methyldopa) decrease BP; treat hypertension; may cause dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, hypotension, drowsiness; check BP at least weekly
Anti-arrhythmics (calcium channel blockers): verapamil HCL; nifedipine; Cardizem reduce constriction of heart muscles; may cause dizziness, slow pulse, hypotension, chest pain, constipation; monitor BP prior to administration
Anti-hypertensives (ACE inhibitors): Capoten (captopril); Lisinopril; Vasotec dilates blood vessels; treats hypertension; may cause hypotension, nausea, vomiting, cough; monitor HR and BP
Anti-arrhythmics/Anti-hypertensives (beta-adrenergic blockers/beta blockers): Inderal (propranolol); Lopressor, Toprol XL (metoprolol); Tenormin (atenolol) blocks effects of epinephrine, causing heart to beat slowly and with less force, lowering BP; may cause bronchospasm, fatigue, hypotension, bradycardia; check apical pulse before administering
Anti-hypertensive Combination Medications monitor BP weekly
Anti-hypertensives (Angiotensin Receptor Blockers) dilates blood vessels, lowering BP; do not take with potassium supplements
Vasodilators: Nitroglycerin; Nitro-Bid (ointment); Nitrostat dilate blood vessels and improve blood supply to heart; treat hypertension
Anti-Coagulants: Lovenox (not given by QMA); Coumadin (warfarin); Heparin blood thinner; prevents clots from forming and growing; may cause hemorrhage; observe for signs of bleeding
Platelet Aggregation Inhibitors (meds that help prevent blood from clotting): ASA (aspirin) prevent platelets from clumping; may increase bleeding tendencies; observe for signs of bleeding
Cholesterol Lowering Agents block the liver from making cholesterol; may cause muscle pain, nausea, rash; watch for liver toxicity and muscle pain
Triglyceride Lowering Agents reduce risk of coronary artery disease; may cause headache, GI upset, rash, dizziness, blurred vision; monitor for liver impairment
