Term | Definition |
---|---|
Cardiotonics: Lanoxin, Lanoxicap (digoxin) | improve contraction of heart muscle leading to increased circulation; slows and strengthens heart; may see halos around visual images; check pulse before giving (do not give if under 60) |
Anti-arrhythmics: Pacerone (amiodarone) | slows conduction of electrical impulses to regulate heart rate/rhythm; treats angina and arrhythmias; give 1 hr before or 2 hrs after meals with full glass of water; check pulse routinely |
Anti-hypertensives (beta-adrenergic blockers/beta blockers): Catapres (clonidine HCL); Aldomet (methyldopa) | decrease BP; treat hypertension; may cause dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, hypotension, drowsiness; check BP at least weekly |
Anti-arrhythmics (calcium channel blockers): verapamil HCL; nifedipine; Cardizem | reduce constriction of heart muscles; may cause dizziness, slow pulse, hypotension, chest pain, constipation; monitor BP prior to administration |
Anti-hypertensives (ACE inhibitors): Capoten (captopril); Lisinopril; Vasotec | dilates blood vessels; treats hypertension; may cause hypotension, nausea, vomiting, cough; monitor HR and BP |
Anti-arrhythmics/Anti-hypertensives (beta-adrenergic blockers/beta blockers): Inderal (propranolol); Lopressor, Toprol XL (metoprolol); Tenormin (atenolol) | blocks effects of epinephrine, causing heart to beat slowly and with less force, lowering BP; may cause bronchospasm, fatigue, hypotension, bradycardia; check apical pulse before administering |
Anti-hypertensive Combination Medications | monitor BP weekly |
Anti-hypertensives (Angiotensin Receptor Blockers) | dilates blood vessels, lowering BP; do not take with potassium supplements |
Vasodilators: Nitroglycerin; Nitro-Bid (ointment); Nitrostat | dilate blood vessels and improve blood supply to heart; treat hypertension |
Anti-Coagulants: Lovenox (not given by QMA); Coumadin (warfarin); Heparin | blood thinner; prevents clots from forming and growing; may cause hemorrhage; observe for signs of bleeding |
Platelet Aggregation Inhibitors (meds that help prevent blood from clotting): ASA (aspirin) | prevent platelets from clumping; may increase bleeding tendencies; observe for signs of bleeding |
Cholesterol Lowering Agents | block the liver from making cholesterol; may cause muscle pain, nausea, rash; watch for liver toxicity and muscle pain |
Triglyceride Lowering Agents | reduce risk of coronary artery disease; may cause headache, GI upset, rash, dizziness, blurred vision; monitor for liver impairment |
