Insulins (not given by QMA): Humulog; Novolog | replace insulin in body when it is not produced by islets of Langerhans in pancreas; treats diabetes; may cause perspiration, irritability, drowsiness, urticaria, anxiety, depression, hypoglycemia; observe for rashes/bumps at injection sites |
Oral Hypoglycemic Agents: Glucophage, Fortamet (metformin); Glucotrol (glipizide) | stimulate islets of Langerhans in pancreas to produce insulin and lower blood sugar; treat type II diabetes; administer about 30 mins before meal; may cause sulfonamide sensitivity |
GLP-1: Ozempic | mimic functions of natural hormones that help lower post-meal blood sugar levels; may cause nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, decreased appetite; monitor for stomach problems, kidney failure, inflammation of pancreas |
Meds that raise blood glucose | may cause hot dry flushed skin, fruity breath, excessive thirst, low BP; monitor for signs of hyperglycemia |
Meds that decrease blood glucose | may cause cold clammy skin, confusion, hunger, drowsiness, irritability; monitor for signs of hypoglycemia |
Thyroid Hormones: Synthroid, Levoxyl, levothyroxine | replacement therapy if thyroid is not producing sufficient hormones; treat hypothyroidism; may cause chest pains, tremors, palpitations, nervousness, insomnia, sweating; administer 30 min before meal on empty stomach |
Gonadal Hormones: Premarin (estrogen) | hormone replacement or supplementation; may cause depression, hair loss, breast tenderness, leg cramps, increase BP; monitor BP regularly |
Androgens: Fortesta | hormone replacement or supplementation; may cause headache, depression, growth of facial hair, edema, weight gain; monitor weight regularly |
