Influenza(flu)/Antivirals: Symmetrel | stimulate immune system to make antibodies to fight flu virus; may cause nausea, vomiting, runny nose, stuffy nose, cough, diarrhea, behavioral changes; must be taken within 48 hours after onset of symptoms to be effective |
Antiseptics/Disinfectants: Betadine; Betagen; Dakin's Solution | kill/prevent growth and reproduction of microorganisms; may cause irritation, rashes, itching, dryness, redness, stinging, inflammation of skin; not effective on c-diff; not for oral use |
Sulfonamides (Sulfa medications): Bactrim | synthetically-made medication that act on specific bacteria; treat UTI and digestive tract infections; may cause headache, nausea, abdominal pain; give with plenty of fluids |
Antibiotics: Penicillin V, Omnipen, Principen (ampicillin); Amoxil (amoxicillin trihydrate); Augmentin | kill/prevent growth and reproduction of specific bacteria; treatment of various infections; must be given at same time in order to maintain therapeutic level in blood stream; may cause nausea, vomiting, hives, rash, vaginitis, diarrhea, UTI |
Anti-fungals: Nystatin; Monistat | kill fungal cells or prevent them from reproducing; can be very toxic; may cause diarrhea, abdominal pain, skin irritation, rash, indigestion, burning/swelling at site |
Antivirals: Zovirax (acyclovir) | prevent assembly or release of new virus particles; may cause diarrhea, headache, dizziness, fatigue, muscle or joint pain, N/V, rash |
