PROTEINS

PROTEINS-NUTRITION STUDY GUIDE

QuestionAnswer
PROTEIN IS COMPOSED OF: CARBON, HYDROGEN, OXYGEN & NITROGEN. (PROTEINS ONLY ONE THAT HAS NITROGEN) PROTEINS HELP BODY TO BUILD AND REPAIR TISSUE.
PROTEIN IS COMPOSED OF A CLASS OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS KNOWN AS: AMINO ACIDS
20 COMMON AMINO ACIDS CLASSIFIED AS: INDISPENSABLE, DISPENSABLE & CONDITIONALLY INDISPENSABLE.
INDISPENSABLE AMINO ACIDS: ESSENTIAL AMINO ACIDS. SOMETHING WE NEED TO OBTAIN IN OUR DIET. BODY CAN NOT MANUFACTURE THEM. GREATEST PORTION OF AMINO ACIDS COME FROM ANIMAL PRODUCTS. 9 OF THEM.
DISPENSABLE AMINO ACIDS: AMINO ACIDS THAT THE BODY CAN SYNTHESIZE FROM OTHER AMINO ACIDS. DON'T NECESSARY NEED. 5 OF THEM.
CONDITIONALLY INDISPENSABLE AMINO ACIDS: UNDER CERTAIN PHYSIOLOGIC CONDITIONS THESE AMINO ACIDS MUST BE CONSUMEDIN THE DIET. 6 OF THEM.
3 FACTORS THAT WOULD INCREASE OUR REQUIREMENT FOR PROTEIN: 1.) ILLNESS OR DISEASE-PREGNANCY, FEVER, MASSIVE BURNS, SURGERY.2.) TISSUE GROWTH INCREASE-PERIODS OF RAPID GROWTH, ADOLESCENCE, FETAL GROWTH, INFANCY, BREAST FEEDING.3.) QUALITY OF DIETARY PROTEIN.
CATABOLISM: PROCESS OF BREAKING DOWN PROTEINS INTO AMINO ACIDS. (SMALLER ONES) RELEASE OF ENERGY.
DEAMINATION: REMOVE THE PART OF THE AMINO ACID THAT CONTAIN NITROGEN THEN CONVERTING IT TO AMMONIA & EXCRETING IT TO UREA.
WASTE PRODUCTS OF THE BREAK DOWN OF AMINO ACIDS: AMMONIA & UREA
POSITIVE NITROGEN BALANCE: 1.) BODY TAKES IN MORE NITROGEN THAT IT EXCRETES. 2.) STORES MORE NITROGEN BY BUILDING MORE TISSUES.3.) OCCURS NORMALLY DURING RAPID GROWTH PERIODS.4.) OCCURS IN ILL OR MALNUTRITION PTS.
NEGATIVE NITROGEN BALANCE: 1.) BODY TAKES IN LESS NITROGEN THAN IT EXCRETES.2.) BODY HAS INADEQUATE BODY INTAKE & LOSING NITROGEN BY BREAKING DOWN MORE TISSUE.3.) THIS OCCURS WITH MALNUTRITION & ILLNESS.
--------------CONTINUE------------------------- 4.) OCCURS WITH PROTEIN DEFICIENCY DISEASES.5.) CAUSE OF LOSE OF MUSCLE TISSUE, IMPAIRMENT OF BODY ORGANS, INCREASES RISK OF INFECTION. (FOLLOWING PERIODS AFTER SURGERY BODY MIGHT GO INTO NEGATIVE NITROGEN BALANCE)
FUNCTIONS OF PROTEINS: PRIMARY TISSUE BUILDING. SUPPLY MATERIAL FOR GROWTH & DEVELOPMENT. PROTEIN FUNDAMENTAL STRUCTURE OF EVERY CELL.
WATER BALANCE: #1 PLASMA PROTEIN IS ALBUMIN. IT HELPS CONTROL WATER BALANCE.
PROTEINS PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN OUR BODIES DEFENSE SYSTEM: PROTEIN IS USED TO BUILD WBC LYMPHOCYTES
FOOD PROTEIN ARE CLASSIFIED AS: HIGH PROTEIN FOODS 1.) COMPLETE PROTEIN (FOOD THAT CONTAINS ALL 9 INDISPENSABLE AMINO ACIDS. PRIMARY ANIMAL ORIGIN) EXAMPLES ARE: MEATS, EGG, CHEESE, MILK, SOY PRODUCTS.
FOOD PROTEIN ARE CLASSIFIED AS: LOW PROTEIN FOODS INCOMPLETE PROTEIN. PLANT SOURCE. DEFICIENT IN 1 OF THE 9 INDISPENSABLE AMINO ACIDS. EXAMPLES: GRAINS, SEEDS, NUTS, VEGETABLE, FRUITS, LAGOONS.
VEGETARIN DIET BECAUSE MOST PLANT PROTEINS ARE INCOMPLETE(LACKING 1 OR MORE AMINO ACIDS), MATCH PLANT FOODS THAT THE AMINO ACIDS ARE MISSING IN ONE FOOD ARE SUPPLIED BY ANOTHER ONE. CALLED COMPLEMENTARY PROTEIN.
VEGETARIAN DIET.INCREASE BASIC USE OF: GRAINS, SOY PRODUCT & DRY LAGOON PRODUCTS.
PEPSIN: MAIN GASTRIC ENZYME. SPECIFIC TO PROTEIN.
RENNIN: GASTRIC ENZYME ONLY PRESENT IN INFANCY AND CHILDHOOD. VITAL FOR DIGESTION OF MILK. "MILK CURDLING ENZYME". ACTS ON SOMETHING IN MILK TO CURD. HELPS IT FROM PRODUCING TOO RAPIDLY TO STOMACH.
PANCREATIC SECRETIONS 3 ENZYMES: TRYPSIN, CHYMOTRYPSIN & CARBOXYPEPTIDOSE
TWO SEVERE FORMS OF MALNUTRITION: KWASHIOKOR & MARASMUS
PROBLEMS WITH EXCESS: RISK FOR CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE. FILL UP ON PROTEIN-NO ROOM FOR ANYHING ELSE, (FRUITS, VEGS. WHOLEGRAIN). KIDNEYS WORK OVERTIME. INCREASE CALCIUM LOSS IN BONE.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
