Pituitary Gland Master gland - controls the activity of the other endocrine glands
Acromegaly Enlargement of the extremities caused by excessive secretion of the growth hormone AFTER puberty
Gigantism Abnormal overgrowth of the body caused by excessive secretion of growth hormone BEFORE puberty
Hyperpituitarism excessive secretion by the anterior lobe of the pituitary
Hypopituitarism Reduced secretion due to partial or complete loss of function of the anterior lobe
Pituitarism Any disorder of the pituitary gland
Cretinism congential lack of thyroid secretions. If not treated, will result in arrested physical and mental growth
Graves Disease Autoimmune disorder characterized by hyperthyroidism, goiter and exopthalmos
Goiter Abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland - can see swelling in the neck
Exopthalmos abnormal protrusion of the eyes
hypoparathyroidism insufficient secretions of parathyroid gland - can lead to tetany
tetany periodic and painful muscle spasms
hypocalcemia abnormally low levels of calcium in the blood - leads to tetany
hyperparathyroidism overproduction of PTH. This causes hypercalcemia which may lead to weakened bones and the formation of kidney stones
hypercalcemia abnormally high levels of calcium in blood
parathyroidectomy surgical removal of one or more of the parathyroid glands - usually done to control hyperparathyroidism
adrenalitis inflamation of the adrenal gland
addison's disease progressive disease that occurs when adrenal glands do not produce enough cortisol. Can be life threatening
Cushing's syndrome caused by prolonged exposure to high levels of cortisol.
hyperglycemia abnormally high concentration of glucose in the blood
hyperinsulinism excessive secretion of insulin = leads to hypoglycemia
hypoglycemia abnormally low concentration of glucose in the blood
pancreatalgia pain in the pancreas
pancreatitis inflammation of the pancreas
Pancreatectomy surgical removal of pancreas
thymitis inflammation of the thymus gland
thymoma benign tumor derived from thymus tissue
thymectomy surgical removal of thymus gland
pinealopathy any disease or disorder of the pineal gland
pinealectomy surgical removal of the pineal gland
hypergonadism excessive secretion of hormones by the sex glands
hypogonadism deficient secretion of hormones by the sex glands
gynecomastia excessive mammary development in the male
