Where are diverticula commonly located? Sigmoid colon
Diverticulosis Characterized as a disease, it is the presence of diverticula and is usually asymptomatic.
Diverticulitis Characterized as infection or inflammation
What are causes of diverticula? Related to food, alcohol, chronic constipation. Person with this condition has decrease fiber in their diet.
DISEASE IS MOST PREVALENT IN INDUSTRIALIZED POPULATIONS THAT CONSUME DIETS LOW IN FIBER AND HIGH IN REFINED CHOs. Diverticulosis
IS INFLAMMATION OF THE DIVERTICULI DIVERTICULITIS
When does infection (diverticulitis) occur? When undigested food gets trapped in the diverticulum and it's blood supply becomes impaired allowing bacterial invasion.
What is a common manifestation of diverticulitis. Pain.
Where is pain commonly located with patients with diverticulitis? left sided and may be mild to severe and either steady or cramping.
Constipation, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and low-grade fever may occur Pt with diverticulitis may have these symptoms.
Hemorrhage, peritonitis, abscess or fistula formation, and bowel obstruction. Complications of diverticulitis
What are nurses main role for treating pt with diverticulitis? Education- emphasizing the importance of high fiber diets.
pts with acute diverticulitis nurse to teach food and liquid limitations, why fiber is limited during acute inflammation but increased for chronic mgmt.
Change in bowel habits clinical manifestation for diverticulitis
Constipation, diarrhea or both clinical manifestation for diverticulitis
Rectal bleeding- hemoroids, colon cancer clinical manifestation for diverticulitis

What meds can be administered for nausea? Fenogran or Zophran. Can give fengran between zophran dosages.
Pt should be on high residue (high bulk, high fiber, high roughage) without spicy foods Management and treatment of diverticulitis

Pt can be given analgesics for pain but NO Morphine sulfate (MSO4) Management and treatment of diverticulitis
Client will probably be given antibiotics Management and treatment of diverticulitis
Client should be advised to exercise more. Management and treatment of diverticulitis
DURING ACUTE INFLAMMATION, THE PATIENT IS PLACED ON BEDREST and NPO ordered. Management and treatment of diverticulitis
