Chadwick's sign | a violet-blue color of vaginal mucous membrane caused by increased vascularity; it is visible about the fourth week of pregnancy |
chloasma gravidarum | a yellow-brown pigmentation over the bridge of the nose and cheeks during pregnancy and in some women who are taking oral contraceptives |
colostrum | a secretion from the breast before the onset of the lactation |
estimated date of delivery (EDD) | Nagele's Rule: determine first day of the last normal menstrual period: count backward 3 months: add 7 days: correct the year if needed |
gestational age | the actual time, from conception to birth, that the fetus remains in the uterus |
Goodell's sign | a softening of cervix that occurs during the second month of pregnancy |
gravida | the number of times a woman has been pregnant |
Hegar's sign | a softening of the lower uterine segment found upon palpation in the second or third month of pregnancy |
lactation | the process of producing and supplying milk |
amenorrhea | the absence of suppression of the menstruation |
lightening | the moving of the fetus and uterus downward into the pelvic cavity |
multipara | a woman who has had more than one pregnancy in which the fetus(es) was viable (20 weeks gestation) |
para | a woman who has borne offspring who reached the age of viability (20-24 weeks gestation) |
primigravida | a woman who is pregnant for the first time |
nullipara | a woman who has not given birth to a child who reached the point of viability |
quickening | the first fetal movements felt by the pregnant woman |
