Term | Definition |
---|---|
dynamics | how forces affect motion |
force | a push or a pull (or any action) that causes an object to move faster, slower, stop, change direction, change size, or change shape |
newton | the SI unit of force |
net force | the sum total of all forces acting on an object |
balanced forces | equal and opposite forces acting on the same object |
equilibrium | the state in which all forces acting on an object are balanced |
unbalanced forces | opposite forces acting on the same object that are not equal in magnitude |
acceleration | the speeding up, slowing down, or change in direction of an object |
friction force | a force in the opposite direction of the applied force, which opposes the motion (examples include static, sliding, rolling, and viscous) |
applied force | a pushing or pulling contact force exerted on an object or person by another object or person |
contact force | any force on one object by another object that is touching it |
inertia | the property of matter that describes an object’s resistance to change in motion |
