Rite Def a particular way of celebrating the sacraments in the Catholic Church
Sign of Baptism Def priest or emergency person pours water over the head of a person saying, "I baptize you in the name of the Father, Son , and Holy Spirit."
What does Baptism do in relation to our sins? Baptism cleanses us from original sin.
Why did Jesus choose water as a part of the sign of Baptism? Water had a deep meaning to God's people.
1st Example of Water's Meaning to God's People (Baptism) The Spirit of God moved over the waters in the beginning.
2nd Example of Water's Meaning to God's People (Baptism) God used the water to destroy all evil men in Noah's time & save Noah & his family
3rd Example of Water's Meaning to God's People (Baptism) God used the Red Sea to save his people.
4th Example of Water's Meaning to God's People (Baptism) God's people crossed the Jordan River to get to the Promised Land.
How did God's people see water because of John the Baptist? God's people saw water as a sign of the desire to be cleansed of sin after repenting.
What do the words in Baptism tell us? ("I baptize you in the name of the Father...") That the person being baptized is also being consecrated to the Blessed Trinity.
1st Part of the Rite of Baptism for Infants Infant is brought to the church by their godparents & parents.
2nd Part of the Rite of Baptism for Infants Litany of Saints + the Liturgy of the Word (Readings) + Exorcism of child
3rd Part of the Rite of Baptism for Infants The child is anointed with the oil of the catechumens.
4th Part of the Rite of Baptism for Infants The child is Baptized.
Vow of the Parents & Godparents at Baptism (A) ensure the child receives vital sacraments & prays
Vow of the Parents & Godparents at Baptism (B) care for the child's theological virtues (faith, hope, charity)
Vow of the Parents & Godparents at Baptism (C) care for the child's gifts of the Holy Spirit
Vow of the Parents & Godparents at Baptism (Basic) take care of the child's faith
All Catholics Have This in Common (Baptism Related) They are all exorcised at Baptism.
5th Part of the Rite of Baptism for Infants The child is anointed with sacred chrism, given white clothing, given a white candle.
What do the white clothes at Baptism represent? purity & sinlessness
Exorcism Def the special & powerful ceremony of the Church where the evil influencer (devil) is driven away from one
Sacred Chrism Def consecrated by the bishop & used to show that the new Christian shares in Christ's triple office
Oil of Catechumens Def oil blessed by a bishop for use in Baptism & Holy Orders
What is Christ's triple office? Priest (attending mass, being holy), Prophet (spreading the gospel), King (treating others nicely)
What happens between the anointing with oil & actual Baptism of the infant? (rite of Baptism for infants) the baby, through the lips of his parents & godparents, rejects sin & Satan & accepts the teachings of Jesus as stated in the Creed
