TermDefinition
Boyle's Law Principle of physics that states that the pressure of a gas is proportional to its volume.
Charles's Law Gas law that states that volume is directly proportional to temperature when pressure is held constant; sometimes called Gay-Lussac’s law.
Dalton's Law Gas law that states that the total pressure exerted by a mixture of gases is the sum of the pressure of each individual gas; also called law of partial pressure.
Henry's Law Gas law that describes how the pressure of a gas relates to the concentration of that gas in a liquid solution.
Bohr effect When increased Pco2 decreases the affinity between hemoglobin and oxygen.
Fick's Law A set of principles that together describe diffusion and factors that affect diffusion; also called Fick’s law of diffusion.
Haldane effect Phenomenon that refers to the increased CO2 loading caused by a decrease in Po2.
Arterial Blood Po2 Partial pressure of oxygen in the blood of arteries.
chief cell Cells lining the gastric glands of the stomach that secrete pepsinogen and intrinsic factor; also called zymogenic cells.
electrolyte Substance that dissociates into ions in solution, rendering the solution capable of conducting an electric current.
