W.E.B. DuBois | First African American to receive a doctorate from Harvard; believed in immediate racial equality; founded the Niagara Movement which insisted that blacks should seek a liberal arts education. Niagara became the NAACP. |
Marcus Garvey | An immigrant from Jamaica who believed that African Americans should build a separate society; black pride; founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA); encouraged followers to go back to Africa and help; convicted of mail fraud and jailed. |
Martin Luther King | Pastor of a Baptist church elected to lead the bus boycott. He was for nonviolent resistance. Founded Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). I have a Dream speech. Shot April 4, 1968. |
Rosa Parks | A seamstress and an NAACP officer who stayed seated on the bus when told to move for a white man to sit down. She was arrested. |
