Order of draw

Phlebotomy tube order of draw and additives

TermDefinition
What is the standard order of draw? Blood culture/Yellow (SPS)-Lt blue-red-SST-PST-green-lavender-grey
What additive is in lavender/pink tubes? What dept? Spray coated K2 EDTA (Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) Hematology & Blood bank
What additive is in light green tubes? dark green? what dept? Lithium heparin, sodium heparin - Chemistry
What tube can be used in place of culture bottles? Yellow SPS
What does SST/PST stand for? Serum separator tube, Plasma separator tube
What additive is in light blue tubes? What dept? Sodium citrate - Coagulation
What is the difference between an SST and a PST? One separates plasma, one separates serum. PST can be used STAT since clotting is not required.
If a small amount of blood is obtained for cultures, which bottle should be filled? Aerobic
What is the ratio for Lt blue tubes? 9:1, 9 parts blood to 1 part additive
What are the additives in the red tube? What dept? Glass-none, plastic-silica coated (clot activator) - Chemistry, Immunology & Serology, Blood Bank
What are the additives in the red tiger top? What dept? Silica coated (clot activator) and thixotropic gel - Chemistry
What tube has the same additives as the red tiger top? Gold
What is the general clotting time for SST tubes? 30 minutes
What color top is the rapid serum separator (RST)? Orange - thrombin additive
The only 2 tubes with thrombin as their additive are? Orange and grey/yellow tiger
What is the yellow top ACD used for? HLA typing, DNA and paternity testing
What additive is in the white top tube? K2 EDTA and thixotropic gel
What is the white/pearl top tube used for? Molecular/PCR testing and bDNA testing (branched)
What additives are in grey top tubes? What dept? Sodium fluoride and/or potassium oxalate - Chemistry
What tests can be drawn in a grey top tube? Glucose (primarily), blood alcohol (ETOH), Hemoglobin A1C, lactic-acid
What is a standard mnemonic for the order of draw? Stop Light Red Stay Put Green Light Go
What tube contains liquid K3 EDTA? Glass Lavender
What tube is used for lead tests only? and what additive is in it? Tan - K2 EDTA
What are royal blue top tubes used for? Trace-element, toxicology, and nutritional chemistry
What additives are in the royal blue top tube? Silica coated (clot activator) - K2 EDTA - sodium heparin
What are blood cultures used for? What dept? Find bacteria and other germs in the blood - Microbiology
What does EDTA, Sodium Citrate, and sodium fluoride do? Prevents blood from clotting by binding calcium
What do lithium/sodium heparin do? Inactivate thrombin and thromboplastin (platelets)
What tube should never be used for hematology or lithium testing? Green
what does ACD do in the yellow top? Inhibits clotting but maintains RBC viability
What does SPS do in the yellow top? Preserves specimens for cultures
What does sodium Fluoride do? Inhibits glycolic action, preserves sugar from breaking down for up to 3 days
What tube is inverted 3-4 times? Light Blue
What tube is inverted 8 times? Yellow, green, lavender, grey
What tube is inverted 5 times? Red tiger
How many times is a plain red inverted? None
