9 Chem Reactions

TermDefinition
Law of conservation of mass atoms are not created or destroyed in a chemical reaction. They can only be rearranged.
Chemical Reaction a rearrangement of atoms, often accompanied by a chemical change
Products chemicals produced in a chemical reaction. They are written on the right-hand side of the arrow.
Reactants chemicals that take part in a chemical reaction. They are written on the left-hand side of the arrow.
Word equation simple written description of what is happening in a reaction
Compound a substance made of 2 or more different atoms
Molecule a substance made from 2 or more atoms
Element a specific type of atom
Controlled Variables Any variable that should not change during an experiment.  These variables are kept as constant as possible to ensure the test is fair.
Dependent Variable The variable that responds to the independent variable. The dependent variable is the one being measured in the experiment.
Hypothesis A prediction of whether the independent variable will have an effect on the dependent variable. Prediction of results.
Independent Variable The variable that is compared or changed by the researcher.
Qualitative deals with characteristics. – that pertaining to quality, is the kind of observation where a person observes a certain thing based on its physical qualities or properties. This observation uses all five senses – sight, smell, hearing, touch, and taste.
Quantitative deals with numbers. – that pertaining to quantity, is the kind of observation where a person observes a certain thing based on numbers and measurements.
