Postpartal Period (Puerperium) Refers to the 6-week period after childbirth. It involves both retrogressive (involution of the uterus and vagina) and progressive changes (production of milk, restoration of menstrual cycle, parenting role).
Psychological Changes of the Postpartal Period Significant psychological transition where individuals, particularly new parents, adjust to new roles and bond with their newborns.
Parental Attachment/Bonding Emotional connection between parents and newborns, facilitated by activities like enface position (direct eye contact with newborn) and engrossment (active bonding behaviors).
Sibling Visitation Opportunity for siblings to meet the newborn, reducing potential feelings of neglect and helping integrate the new family member.
Postpartal Blues Feelings of sadness or mood swings experienced by up to 50% of postpartum individuals, likely due to hormonal changes and adjustment to new roles.
Involution (Uterus) Process where the uterus returns to its pre-pregnant size and condition through contraction and healing.
Lochia Vaginal discharge after childbirth consisting of blood, mucus, and tissue debris. Progresses from rubra (red) to serosa (pink/brown) to alba (white/yellow).
Lactation Production of breast milk stimulated by prolactin and oxytocin hormones, beginning a few days after childbirth.
Return of Menstrual Flow Resumption of menstrual periods following childbirth, influenced by hormonal changes after placental delivery.
Maternal Immunizations Vaccinations recommended postpartum, including Tdap and influenza, to protect both mother and baby.
Vital Signs (Postpartum) Monitoring of temperature, pulse, and blood pressure during the postpartum period to detect signs of complications such as infection or hypertension.
Perineum Area between the vagina and anus that may be tender or swollen after childbirth, requiring comfort measures like ice packs or pillows.
