TermDefinition
Semiotic system A social system with the added property of meaning (Matthiessen, Teruya, & Lam, 2010. p 207)
Genre staged, step by step text structures cultures institutionalise for specific purposes (Martin & Rose, 2008, p. 10)
Register A variety of language in a particular context determined by a particular set of values of the context(Matthiessen, Teruya, & Lam, 2010)
register variables Elements of the immediate situation of a text: field, tenor and mode
strata Order of symbolic abstraction along the hierarchy of language.
metafunctions The highly generalized functions language has evolved to serve and which are evidenced in its organization: ideational, interpersonal and the textual. (Matthiessen, Teruya, & Lam, 2010, p. 151)
discourse semantics This is a combination of discourse (text) and semantics (meaning) so it means the meaning of the text.
lexicogrammar The combination of grammar and lexis (vocabulary).
phonology The system of contrastive relationships among the speech sounds that constitute the fundamental components of a language.
grapheme The smallest functional unit of a writing system.
grammatical intricacy How often a clause complex appears in a text in comparison with simple clauses.
Lexical density The number of lexical items in a clause.
