What is the primary function of surfactant in the alveoli? Reduces surface tension in the alveoli, preventing collapse and making breathing easier.
Describe the process of external respiration. External respiration is the exchange of gases between alveolar air and pulmonary capillary blood, where oxygen diffuses into the blood and carbon dioxide diffuses out.
What is the significance of the oxyhemoglobin dissociation curve? The oxyhemoglobin dissociation curve shows the relationship between oxygen saturation and partial pressure of oxygen, illustrating how hemoglobin binds and releases oxygen under different conditions.
Explain the concept of dead space in the respiratory system. Dead space refers to air that does not participate in gas exchange. It includes anatomical dead space (airways) and physiological dead space (alveoli that are ventilated but not perfused).
What is the role of the medulla oblongata in respiration? The medulla oblongata contains the respiratory center, which controls the basic rhythm of breathing by sending signals to the diaphragm and intercostal muscles.
