Acyclovir Drug of choice for: Herpes simplex virus 1 and 2 and VZV (varicella zoster virus – chickenpox/shingle) Adverse Effects: Nausea, diarrhea, headache, burning when topically applied
Amantadine Only for influenza A virus. For Parkinson disease. Contraindications: **Not for pregnants, children <12 or pt with eczematous rash** Adverse Effects: Nausea, dizziness, insomnia, anticholinergic effect*, orthostatic hypotension*, blurred vision
Ganciclovir For HSV 5: CMV retinitis treatment/maintenance and *prevention* Adverse Effects: Bone marrow toxicity: Neutropenia, thrombocytopenia
Oseltamivir Indications: Treatment and prevention of influenza A and B. Oral use only. **Needs to begin drug within 2 days of symptoms onset.**
Zidovudine For HIV infection. Only anti-HIV med. Given to HIV infected pregnant and to newborn babies to prevent maternal transmission to the infant Adverse Effects: Bone marrow suppression, nausea/headache
D-tap Kids version of T-dap. Give to kids from 6w to 6y of age
Immunization Schedule Birth: Hep B 2 months: Dtap, Hep B, Hib, PVC13, Polio, RV 4 months: Everything except Hep B 6 months: Same as 2 months 12-18 months: Dtap, Hib, PVC13, MMR, Varicella, influenza 4-6 years: Dtap, Polio, MMR, Varicella, influenza
Carbamazapine** Treats trigeminal neuralgia. 1st line of treatment for partial seizures, generalized seizures. Worsen myclonic/absence seizures = contradications Has *Autoinduction* = create enzyme that digest itself in 2mo.
Carbamazapine** - No GF juice, alcohol, decrease oral contraceptives effectiveness - admin lowest dose initially, largest dose @ bedtime - Do not give to pt w/ bone marrow suppression, check cbc, platelets, bruising - Do not give to pt w/HF = risk for fluid oveload
Carbadopa - Levodopa Most commonly used for Parkinson, started as soon as pt become functionally impaired
Phenytoin Prototypical drug for Epilepsy. Indicated for mngt of generalized and focal seizures Adverse effect: *Gingival Hyperplasia (gum overgrowth)* when on long term oral therapy - Scrupulous dental care *Dilantine facies* hypertrophy of facial muscle tissues
Phenytoin Contrain: Heart conditions: Bradycardia Toxic level: cause muscle problem: nygstamus(uncotrolled eye movement), ataxia (poor muscle control), dysarthia(speech), encephalopathy - brain dysfunction Enzyme inducer = increase metabolism of other drugs
