Anamoly: variation of normal
Dentition: refers to general arrangement of teeth
Primary (deciduous, milk) teeth: baby teeth, lost, 20 teeth (10 per arch), does not have premolars!
Permanent/secondary dentition: adult teeth, erupting at age 6, 32 perm.
Mixed dentition: both primary and perm., ages 6-13
Anterior teeth: In front of mouth; includes central incisors, lateral incisors, and canines
Posterior teeth: teeth in back, includes premolars and molars
What teeth does deciduous dentition consist of? primary central incisor, primary lateral incisor, primary canine, primary 1st molar, primary 2nd molar
Succedaneous teeth: refers to perm. teeth that replace primary tooth
What is included in succedaneous teeth? CI, LI, C, PM
What are the mouth divisions? 2 arches, 4 quadrants, 6 sextants
What are the parts of a tooth? crown and root
What is the crown? covered in enamel, visible in oral cavity
Anatomical crown: part covered in enamel
Clinical crown: crown visible in mouth
Root: pat covered in cementum, embedded in bone
What are the 4 tissues of the tooth? 1. enamel 2. dentin 3. cementum 4. pulp
Dentin: makes up majority, found in crown and root
Cementum: mineralized tissue that covers the root
Pulp: nerve of the tooth, found in crown and root
What are the 3 systems used for counting teeth? universal, FDI, palmer
3 hardtissue junctions: cementoenamel, dentinoenamel, cementodentinal
Cementoenmel: "CEJ", cervical line, formed by enamel and cementum
Dentinoenamel: "DEJ", where dentin and enamel meet
Cementodentinal: "CDJ", marks dentin and cementum meeting, inside tooth root
Mesial vs. distal: towards midline vs. further from midline
Buccal: outer surface on posterior teeth
Lingual: towards tongue, palatal
Occusal: biting/top surface on posterior tooth
Facial: outer surface on anterior tooth, labial
Incisal: "biting" surface on anterior teeth
Interproximal space: triangular space between teeth
Embrasure: open space between proximal surfaces of 2 teeth where they diverge
Contact area: 1 tooth touches another in same arch
Interdental papillae: gums between teeth
