The Carolingian Empire 732 A.D. Charles Martel (Charles the hammer) -stopped Islamic innovation in Gaul (France) at the battle of the Tours.
The Carolingian Empire 771 - 800 A.D. Charles ( grandson of Charles Martel ) -became known as Charlemagne-''Charles the Great'' -crowned Roman emperor by pope on Christmas day
