Transillumination use of mirror: directing light off mirror surface and throught anterior teeth

Extraoral fulcrum: stabilization point outside the pt's mouths
Intraoral fulcrum: stabilization point for the hand on a tooth surface
What is good about using transillumination? can reveal carious lesions as dark regions within enamel of interproximal surfaces of anterior teeth; will appear as dark shadows
Procedure for transillumination (light): position light until directly over oral cavity with beam perpendicular to facial surfaces of ant. teeth, patients in chin down position
Procedure for transillumination (mirror): position yourself at 12:00, hold mirror behind mandibular ant. teeth with reflecting surface parallel to lingual surfaces, look directly at teeth, not mirror
