continuous function | a function that can be graphed with a line or an unbroken curve |
decreasing | where the graph of a function goes down when viewed from left to right |
dependent variable | the variable in a relation, usually y, with values that depend on x |
discrete function | a function in which the points on the graph are not connected |
domain | the set of the first numbers of the ordered pairs in a relation |
end behavior | the behavior of a graph at the positive and negative extremes in its domain |
extrema | points that are the locations of relatively high or low function values |
function | a relation in which each element of the domain is paired with exactly one element on the range |
function notation | a way of writing and equation so that y= f(x) |
increasing | where the graph of a function goes up when viewed from left to right |
independent variable | the variable in a relation, usually x, with a value that is subject to choice |
line symmetry | a figure has line symmetry if each half of the figure matches the other side exactly |
linear equation | equation that can be written in the form ax+by=c with a graph that is in a straight line |
linear function | a function with a graph that is a line |
mapping | an illustration that show how each element of the domain is paired with an element in the range |
negative | where the graph of a function lies below the x-axis |
nonlinear function | a function in which a set of points cannot all lie on the same line |
positive | where the graph of a function lies above the x-axis |
range | the set of second numbers of the ordered pairs in a relation |
relation | a set of ordered pairs |
relative maximum | a point on the graph of a function where no other nearby points have a greater y-coordinate |
relative minimum | a point on the graph of a function where no other nearby points have a less y-coordinate |
root | a solution of an equation |
scale | the distance between tick marks on the x and y-axes |
x-intercept | the x-coordinate of a point where a graph crosses the x-axis |
y-intercept | the y-coordinate of a point where a graph crosses the y-axis |
zero | an x-intercept of the graph of a function; a value of x for which f(x)= 0 |
