Hyperthyroid symptoms Nervousness, heat intolerance, rapid pulse, tremor, weight loss, increased appetite
Graves disease Women 5 times more likely to develop it, expothalmos, goiter, remissions and exacerbations. (Hyperthyroidism)
Goiter Enlarged thyroid, auscultation = bruits (sounds like blood flowing through narrow artery), radioactive iodine uptake. (Hyperthyroidism)
Hyperthyroid medications Propylthiouracil (PTU) and Methimazole (beta blockers treat sympathetic effects)
Radioactive iodine therapy 1st treatment choice for non-pregnant women w/ hyperthyroidism
Acute thyrotoxiosis (thyroid storm) life threatening emergency, results from stressors, thyroidectomy patients at risk
Acute thyrotoxiosis assessment Tachycardia, heart failure, shock, hyperthermia, agitation, seizures, V/D, coma
Hypothyroid manifestations Slowing of body processes, slow onset
Hypothyroid medication Levothyroxine (start with low dose, monitor for cardiac side effects, sinomnia, lifelong therapy)
Myxedema coma care Mechanical respiratory support, cardiac monitor, IV thyroid replacement, monitor core temp
Myxedema coma manifestations Impaired consciousness, hypothermia, hypotension, hypoventilation, cardiovascular collapse
Hyperthyroid diagnosis Low TSH, radioactive iodine uptake (RAIU) to differentiates Graves’ disease
Hypothyroid diagnosis Thyroid antibodies, HIGH cholesterol, triglycerides, creatine kinase, LOW RBCs
Hyperparathyroidism manifestations (Results from Hypercalcemia) Kidney stones, apathy, fatigue, weakness, N/V, constipation, peptic ulcers, pancreatitis, hypertension, cardiac dysrhythmias
Hyperparathyroidism management Parathyroidectomy, hydrations, mobility, don’t restrict calcium
Hypoparathyroidism manifestations Tetany, numbness, tingling in extremities, hand and feet stiffness, bronchospasm, laryngeal spasm, carpopedal spasm, anxiety, depression, delirium, ECG changes
Hypoparathyroidism management Calcium gluconate IV, parathormone, quiet environment (no bright lights, no sudden movement), diet high in calcium, low in phosphorus (No dairy)
