Ambulate | To walk |
Aspiration | Choking, accidental entry of food or a foreign object in the windpipe (trachea) |
Body Alignment | Position in which the body can properly function, |
Contracture | When a joint is allowed to remain in the same position from too long, muscles stiffen and shorten preventing joint from moving fully. |
Draw Sheet | Folded large seat/half sheet used to make moving patients easier. |
Enabler | Device to help patients function at their highest possible level |
Fowler's Position | Position in which the patient lies on the back with backrest elevated 45-60 degrees. |
High Fowler's | Position in which the patient lies on the back with backrest elevated to 90 degrees. |
Laceration | Skin Injuries (Tears or breaks in the skin) |
Lateral | On either sides/ away from the midline. |
Mobility | Ability to move or to be moved easily from place to place. |
Orthopenic Position | Position where patient sits upright, and leans slightly forward supporting themselves with the forearms. (helps breathe comfortably) |
Orthotic Devices | Restore or improve functions, prevent deformity and maintain the position of an extremity. (Prevents contracture formation) |
Postural Support | Device used as an enabler that maintains body position and alignment. |
Pressure Injury | Results when unrelieved pressure interferes with blood flow to an area. (Bedsores) |
Procedure | Practices and process used when following facility policies in patient care, prioritizes and orders your responsibilities when doing the task. |
Prone | On the abdomen, spine straight, legs extended, palms facing backwards |
Semi-Fowler's | Position in which the patient is on the back with knees slightly flexed and the head of the bed is elevated 30-45 degrees. |
Slider | Device used with a slippery, low-friction surface that is used for moving patients, |
Spasticity | Sudden, frequent, involuntary muscle contractions that impair function. |
Splint | Also to restore or improve functions, prevent deformity, and maintain the position of an extremity. (Used for lower extremities) |
Supine | On the back, laying with face upward. |
Supportive Device | Used to maintain proper body alignment and position in bed or in a chair. |
Transfer | To get out of bed |
Trochanter Roll | Rolled street or bath blanket placed under the patient extending from waist to mid-thigh; positioned against the hip to prevent lateral hip rotation. |
