DEN110-pulp & PDL

QuestionAnswer
Pulp: loose connective tissue that contains nerve of tooth
Pulp horn: tip of pulp chamber
Pulp chamber: cavity or chamber in center of tooth crown
Pulp canal: "root canal", leads from pulp chamber to apex
Apical foramen: opening at end of root
Functions of pulp: provides vitality, sensory, protection, formation
Composition of pulp: cells/fibers, lymphatics, blood supply, nerve supply
Pulp stones: "denticles", calcifications within the pulp
As the tooth ages, what will we find? increased collagen, decreased elasticity, less cellular/vascular, size decreases
Periodontium: attaches teeth to jaw bone
Periodontium is made of: gingiva, alveolar bone, cementum, PDL
PDL: periodontal membrane
Functions of PDL: supportive, sensory, resorptive, provides nutrients
Components of PDL: collagen fibers, cells, nerves, blood vessels, lymph vessels
PDL consists of 2 groups of fibers: principal and gingival
5 principal fibers: apical, oblique, horizontal, alveolar crest, interradicular
Apical fiber group: apex of root, resists vertical forces (lifting)
Oblique fiber group: apical one third of root, resists vertical and intrusive forces
Horizontal fiber group: midroot, resist horizontal and tipping forces
Alveolar crest fiber group: cervical root, resist vertical and intrusive forces
Interradicular fiber group: between roots, resist vertical and lateral forces
Gingival fibers include: free gingival fibers, attached gingival fibers, circular fibers, transeptal fibers
Sharpey's fibers: heavy collagen fibers of the PDL which embed into cementum
