Abdominal Thrust | A method of attempting to remove an object from the airway of someone who is choking. |
Anaphylaxis | A severe, life threatening allergic reaction. |
Aspiration | The inhalation of food, fluid, or foreign material into the lungs. |
Body Mechanics | The way the parts of the body work together when a person moves. |
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) | The medical procedures used when a person's heart and lungs have stopped working. |
Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA, stroke) | A condition caused when the blood supply to the brain is cut off suddenly by a clot or ruptured blood vessel; also called stroke. |
Choking | When an object lodges in the throat or windpipe, blocking the flow of air. |
Conscious | Having awareness of surroundings, sensations, and thoughts. |
Emesis | The act of vomiting, or ejecting stomach contents through the mouth and/or nose. |
Epistaxis | A nosebleed. |
Fainting (syncope) | Temporary loss of consciousness; also called fainting. |
First Aid | Care given to an injured person by the first people to respond to an emergency. |
Fracture | A broken bone. |
Hyperglycemia | High blood glucose. |
Hypoglycemia | Low blood glucose. |
Incident Report | A report documenting an incident and the response to the incident; also called an occurrence, accident, or event report. |
Myocardial Infarction (MI) | A condition in which blood flow to the heart is blocked and muscle cells die; also called heart attack. |
Oxygen | A gas in the air that is essential for survival. |
Poisining | Injury or death due to swallowing, inhaling, touching, or injecting various drugs, chemicals, venoms, or gases. |
Restraint Alternatives | Measures used in place of a restraint or that reduce the need for a restraint. |
Restriants | A physical or chemical way to restrict voluntary movement or behavior. |
Safety Data Sheet (SDS) | A sheet that provides information on the safe use and hazards of chemicals, as well as emergency steps to take in the event chemicals are splashed, sprayed, or ingested. |
Seizure | A sudden, uncontrolled burst of electrical activity in the brain. |
Shortness of Breath (SOB) | An intense tightening in the chest, air hunger, difficulty breathing, breathlessness, or a feeling of suffocation. |
Shock | A condition that occurs where there is decreased blood flow to organs and tissues. |
Unconscious | The state of not being awake and not aware of things around you, especially as the result of a head injury. |
Vomit | Ejecting stomach contents through the mouth and/or nose. Also called emesis. |
