24hr urine specimen urine specimen consisting of all urine voided in a 24hr time period
CAUTI catheter-associated urinary tract infection; infection that occurs in urethra, bladder, ureter, or kidney when bacteria travels up a catheter
clean-catch specimen urine specimen not including first or last urine voided; also called midstream specimen
condom catheter has an attachment on the end that fits onto penis; also called external/Texas catheter
dialysis process that cleans out body's wastes when kidneys can't because of kidney failure
indwelling catheter remains inside bladder for a period of time with urine draining into a bag
micturition emptying bladder of urine; also called urination or voiding
urinary incontinence inability to control bladder, which leads to an involuntary loss of urine
UTI urinary tract infection; infects urethra, bladder, ureter, or kidney
voiding emptying bladder of urine; also called urination or micturition
BPH benign prostatic hyperplasia; can occur in aging men; prostate enlarges and causes urination issues
chlamydia STI caused by bacteria
genital herpes incurable STI caused by herpes simplex viruses type 1 (HSV-1) or type 2 (HSV-2)
STIs sexually transmitted infections; caused by sexual contact w/ infected ppl, signs/symptoms are not always apparent
syphilis STI caused by bacteria (not chlamydia)
vagititis vagina inflammation
bony prominences areas where bone lies close to the skin; elbows, hips, shoulder blades, etc.
bruise purple/black/blue discoloration on skin caused by blood leakage from broken blood vessels into surrounding tissues; also called contusion
closed wound wound where skin's surface isn't broken; bruise for example
dermatitis skin inflammation
epidermis outer layer of two main tissue layers that make up skin
gangrene death of tissue caused by infection or lack of blood flow
integument natural protective covering
open wound wound where skin's surface is not intact
pressure injuries localized skin damage from shearing or continued pressure over time
pressure points body areas that bear the most weight
scabies contagious skin infection caused by mites that burrow into the skin
shearing skin moves one way while bone underneath moves another way
shingles viral infection caused by same virus that causes chickenpox
anemia less red blood cells or hemoglobin than normal
arrhythmia irregular heartbeat
artery vessel that carries blood away from heart
compression stockings prevent swelling/blood clots and promote circulation; also called elastics
CHF congestive heart failure; heart muscle is damaged and can't pump effectively
diastole phase when heart is relaxing
embolism blockage of blood vessel by a blood clot or foreign substance
heart 4-chambered pumping organ used for blood flow
hypoxia not enough oxygen in body tissues
occlusion complete obstruction of blood vessel
orthopnea shortness of breath when lying down; relieved by sitting up
pulmonary edema accumulation of fluid in lungs typically due to heart failure
PE pulmonary embolism; blockage in pulmonary artery, typically by a blood clot
SCD sequential compression device; plastic air-filled sleeve placed around leg that inflates and deflates regularly to improve circulation and reduce fluid buildup
systole phase where heart contracts
