THROAT CULTURE to identify & isolate pathogens such as beta-hemolytic streptococci
normal resp for newborn 30-80 per min

S/S of sinusitis recent URI, HA, facial pain, purulent nasal discharge, foul breath and fever
nasal polyps benign tumors which once removed may occur
throat culture negative no need for antibiotics
post op tonsillectomy monitor for throat hemorrhage; ability to swallow and dehydration
laryngitis post op rest voice, saline gargles, analgesia and no change, return in 2 weeks
aphonia means loss of voice
epitasis may result from hypertension, clotting disorders and liver disease (nose bleed)
signs and symptoms of hypoxemia (low oxygenation) color, shortness of breath, anxious, restless, tachycardia, tachypnea
asthma caused by narrowing of air passages
order of resp system nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles and alveoli.
pharynx has dual function: respiratory and digestive
trachea a passageway for air to reach the lungs
bronchi passageway for air to and from the lungs
when alveoli becomes enlarged with age it becomes harder to breathe
flouroscopy shows respiratory function (continous x ray) - it shows air going in and out
tachypnea increased respiration- over 20 breathes per min
normal breathing 500 ml of air inhaled and exhaled
orthopnea difficulty breathing in a lying position
chest tubes in water sealed drainage, device is working properly when fluctuation of column of water is moving up and down in the water seal
myocarditus inflammation of middle layer of heart
pneumonia classified according to the causative organism, usually bacteria or viruses
pneumococcal vaccine-conjugated type only given to kids younger than 24 months
pneumococcal vaccine-unconjugated type given to older people
