artery - thick walls - circular borders - high pressure vessels - smaller lumen than veins
elastic arteries closer to heart where the pressure is higher

tunica intima smooth blood vessel lining = decreases resistance to blood flow, continuous with endocardium
tunica media regulates diameter of blood vessels which alters blood pressure
tunica externa/adventitia areolar CT which provides support and protection
branches off of aortic arch (HUMAN) 1. brachiocephalic trunk 2. left common carotid 3. left subclavian
branches off of aorta (CAT) 1. brachiocephalic artery 2. left subclavian artery
branches off of brachiocephalic artery (CAT) 1. right subclavian 2. right common carotid 3. left common carotid
Circle of Willis cerebral arterial circle: circle of arteries that supplies blood to the brain and surrounding structures for collateral circulation
arteries of abdomen (HUMAN) celiac trunk, renal, gonadal, superior and inferior mesenteric
veins of chest brachiocephalic, right and left subclavian, internal and external jugular, superior and inferior vena cava, azygos
veins of arm axillary, brachial, cephalic, basilic, radial and ulnar, median cubital
azygous vein drains chest and abdominal walls
hepatic portal vein vessel that moves blood from spleen and GI tract to liver
hepatic veins bring deoxygenated blood from liver and dump into inferior vena cava
hepatic portal system hepatic portal vein, splenic vein, superior and inferior mesenteric
