Toxic reaction The desired effect is excessive
Side effect Dose-related reaction that is not part of the desired therapeutic outcome
Idiosyncratic reaction Genetically related abnormal drug response
Drug allergy Immunologic response to a drug resulting in a reaction such as a rash or anaphylaxis
Interference with natural defense mechanisms When a drug reduces the body's ability to fight infections
Exaggerated effect on target tissue Considered an extension of the therapeutic effect caused by the overreaction of a sensitive patient or by the use of a dose that is too large
Effect on nontarget tissue Caused by the nontherapeutic action of the drug
Teratogenic effect The adverse relationship between drugs and effects on the developing fetus
Local effect Characterized by local tissue irritation
Drug interactions Occur when the effect of one drug is altered by another drug, can be negative or beneficial
What are the types of drug interaction? Drug-drug Drug-food Drug-disease
Hypersensitivity Occurs when the immune system responds to the drug administered, this reaction is neither dose dependent nor predictable
Idiosyncrasy Neither the drug's side effect nor an allergic reaction
Why do dental hygienists need to be aware of adverse effects? To be able to educate patients and because we will be administering drugs to patients
