4th Chap. 7 The U.S. Constitution Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Convention A gathering of people meeting for a common purpose.
Checks and Balances A system in government that gives each branch the power to check, or limit, the power of the other branches.
Delegate A person chosen by a group to represent them at a meeting.
Compromise A settlement of a conflict or disagreement by each side giving up something in order to get something.
Democracy A form of government in which the people rule, either directly or through elected representatives.
Executive Branch The branch of government responsible for carrying out and enforcing laws.
Constitution A written plan for government
Debate A discussion involving people or groups with opposing points of view.
Rights Freedoms that are protected by law.
Framer A person who shapes or creates a plan or system.
Separation of Powers The division of power between different branches of government to ensure that no one branch can gain too much control in government.
Republic A form of government where people rule themselves through elected representatives.
Judicial Branch A the branch of government responsible for interpreting laws and administering justice.
Representative A person chosen to act, speak, or make decisions for another person or group of people.
Shared Power A power or authority held by multiple levels of government, usually the federal and state governments.
Legislative Branch The branch of government responsible for making laws.
Preamble An introduction that states the purpose of a document.
