Ischemic Stroke blood clot blocking blood flow to the brain; most common, about 80% of all strokes.
Hemorrhagic Stroke ruptured blood vessel in the brain leading to bleeding; less common, about 20% of all strokes.
What are the early warning signs of a stroke? sudden numbness, confusion, trouble speaking, vision issues, dizziness, loss of balance, and severe headache.
Hypertension: Blood pressure ≥ 140/90 mmHg.
High Cholesterol: HDL < 40 mg/dL, LDL cholesterol > 130 mg/dL, or total cholesterol > 200 mg/dL.
Smoking: Current smoker or history of smoking within the last 6 months.
Diabetes: Fasting blood glucose ≥ 100 mg/dL
Obesity: Body Mass Index (BMI) ≥ 30 kg/m². Waist girth of 40 in for women, 35 in for men
Sedentary Lifestyle: Not participating in at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise
Unhealthy Diet: High intake of saturated fats, trans fats, and sodium.
Family History: Immediate family members with CVD. <55 years for father, <65 years for mother
what are the 8 positive risk factors for CVD? Age, family history, smoking, sedentary lifestyle, obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, prediabetes
What is the 1 negative risk factor for CVD? high HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol)
What is the cut point of high HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol) above 60 mg/dL
Low Risk Stratification Criteria No significant risk factors; meets all ACSM guidelines for exercise without restrictions.
Moderate Risk Stratification Criteria Presence of 2 or more risk factors
High Risk Stratification Criteria Known cardiovascular, pulmonary, or metabolic disease or one or more signs/symptoms
What is a low-risk person cleared to do? cleared to participate in both moderate and vigorous physical activities
What does a low-risk person need a doctor for? they don't need any medical clearance unless new or unusual symptoms occur
What is a moderate-risk person cleared to do? can engage in moderate-intensity activities without clearance but should consult a healthcare provider before vigorous exercise
what does a moderate-risk person need a doctor for? needs a doctor's consultation before engaging in vigorous physical activities to ensure it's safe, especially given their risk factors.
what is a high-risk person cleared to do? should only participate in physical activities under medical supervision and with specific recommendations from their healthcare provider, given their significant health concerns.
what does a high-risk person need a doctor for? detailed evaluation and tailored exercise recommendations
Age: ≥ 45 years for women, ≥ 55 years for men
