Plantation A large farm in tropical and subtropical climates that specializes in the production of one or two crops for sale, usually to a more developed country.
Segregation Separation of people based on racial, ethnic, or other differences
Redlining A process by which banks draw lines on a map and refuse to lend money to purchase or improve property within the boundaries.
Harlem Renaissance A period in the 1920s when African-American achievements in art and music and literature flourished
Civil Rights Movement social movement in the United States during the 1950s and 1960s, in which people organized to demand equal rights for African Americans and other minorities.
Industrial Revolution A period of rapid growth in the use of machines in manufacturing and production that began in the mid-1700s
Infrastructure the basic physical and organizational structures and facilities (e.g., buildings, roads, and power supplies) needed for the operation of a society or enterprise.
Minimum Wage a minimum price that an employer can pay a worker for an hour of labor
Child Labor Children were viewed as laborers throughout the 19th century. Many children worked on farms, small businesses, mills and factories.
New Deal A series of reforms enacted by the Franklin Roosevelt administration between 1933 and 1942 with the goal of ending the Great Depression.
Natural Resources Materials or substances such as minerals, forests, water, and fertile land that occur in nature and can be used for economic gain
NAFTA North American Free Trade Agreement; allows open trade with US, Mexico, and Canada. Now replaced with USMCA
