abolition the act of abolishing or ending a system or practice (ex. slavery)
tariff a tax paid on goods that come from another country
secede to leave
confederacy a loose union of groups or states
civil war a war between groups in the same country
emancipation to set free
blockade a line of ships that keeps goods from entering or leaving a place
reconstruction the time after the civil war where the United States was changing and rebuilding
carpetbagger business people, government officials and teachers that traveled from the north to the south to profit from Reconstruction
black codes laws that limited the rights of African-Americans
Freedmen's Bureau A government agency that helped formerly enslaved African Americans and poor white Americans buy land and find work after the civil war.
sharecropping a system where a landowner gave a worker land , a small house and sold them farm tools and supplies.
segregation a system that kept African Americans separated from white people
