Physiology | Science of body functions. How the body works. |
Anatomy | Science of body structures and relationships among them. |
Levels of Organization | 1-Chemical, 2-Cell, 3-Tissue, 4-Organ, 5-Organ System, 6-Organism |
Organism | Collection of systems; whole individual. |
Organ System | Collection of organs that carry out combined functions. There are 11 systems in the body. |
Organ | Collection of different types of tissues that carry out a specific function(s). |
Tissue | Similar cells forming structures having similar functions. 4 different types of tissue in the body. |
Cell | Smallest living unit composed of organelles. |
Chemical | Lowest level of organization in body. Made of atoms/elements, forms molecules |
Components of a feedback system | Receptor, Control Center, Effector |
Effector | Receives output from control center and causes a response. |
Receptor | Nerve impulses & chemical signals that monitor & send info to the control center. |
Control Center | Receives input & sends output to effectors. |
Negative Feedback Mechanism | To return to normal value. Ex: Low temp, shivering occurs to raise temp. |
Homeostasis | Equilibrium, balance in the body. Always changing. |
Life Processes | Metabolism, Responsiveness, Movement, Growth, Differentiation, Reproduction. |
Metabolism | Simply put- using & making energy.1)Catabolism-breakdown2) Anabolism- building |
Responsiveness | Ability to detect and respond to changes in external or internal environment. “Reacting to a stimulus” |
Movement | Motion of whole body, individual organs, single cells, or cell components.Ex: leg propelling body, gallbladder contracting, cells traveling. |
Growth | Increase in size and/or # of cells. Ex: Body growth as a whole, or cells multiplying. |
Differentiation | Dvlpmnt of a cell from unspecified to specified state. Happens when embryo develops & in adults for tissue repair and normal cell turnover. |
Reproduction | Replacement, repair, or growth of cells. Also refers to creation of a new person. |
