Physiology Science of body functions. How the body works.
Anatomy Science of body structures and relationships among them.
Levels of Organization 1-Chemical, 2-Cell, 3-Tissue, 4-Organ, 5-Organ System, 6-Organism
Organism Collection of systems; whole individual.
Organ System Collection of organs that carry out combined functions. There are 11 systems in the body.
Organ Collection of different types of tissues that carry out a specific function(s).
Tissue Similar cells forming structures having similar functions. 4 different types of tissue in the body.
Cell Smallest living unit composed of organelles.
Chemical Lowest level of organization in body. Made of atoms/elements, forms molecules
Components of a feedback system Receptor, Control Center, Effector
Effector Receives output from control center and causes a response.
Receptor Nerve impulses & chemical signals that monitor & send info to the control center.
Control Center Receives input & sends output to effectors.
Negative Feedback Mechanism To return to normal value. Ex: Low temp, shivering occurs to raise temp.
Homeostasis Equilibrium, balance in the body. Always changing.
Life Processes Metabolism, Responsiveness, Movement, Growth, Differentiation, Reproduction.
Metabolism Simply put- using & making energy.1)Catabolism-breakdown2) Anabolism- building
Responsiveness Ability to detect and respond to changes in external or internal environment. “Reacting to a stimulus”
Movement Motion of whole body, individual organs, single cells, or cell components.Ex: leg propelling body, gallbladder contracting, cells traveling.
Growth Increase in size and/or # of cells. Ex: Body growth as a whole, or cells multiplying.
Differentiation Dvlpmnt of a cell from unspecified to specified state. Happens when embryo develops & in adults for tissue repair and normal cell turnover.
Reproduction Replacement, repair, or growth of cells. Also refers to creation of a new person.
