What is the Articles of Confederation? 1st constitution of the US. made 1776,adopted 1781. made purposely weak.
What is Manifest Destiny? the belief that willed the US to have all of the land between the Atlantic and pacific ocean.
What are the 3 branches?? Legislative (congress) Executive (president) Judicial.
What are the bill of rights? the 1st ten amendments of the constitution.
What is emancipation proclamation? declared all slaves in confederate states of America free.
What was the 10 percent plan? president Lincoln's plan to readmit the confederate states.
What was the Wade-Davis bill? passed july 4, 1864. congression plan for reconstruction;abolish slavery; Lincoln pocket vetoed the bill.
Who & when was Lincoln assisinated? John Wilkes assassinated Lincoln, april 14,1865 at Ford's theatre.
Who took over Lincoln's place? (his VP) Andrew Johnson
What was president johnson's recontrucion proclamation? pard on all low ranking southerners who take loyalty oaths
What did the 13th amendment do? abolished slavery
what did the 14th amendment do? gave freed slaves citizenship & everyone equal protection under the law.
What were black codes? laws that prevented blacks to do certain things.
What did the 18565 congressional session do? extended life of the freedmen's bureau.
What was the tenure of office act? restricted president's ability to remove cabinet memberss.
What did the 15th amendment do?? states could no longer deny suffrage (right to vote) based on race, color or previous condition of servitude.
Who were the carpet baggers? white northerns going to the south
Who were the scalawags? white southerners who cooperated with reconstruction
what was the Ku-klux plan? attempted to regain power by recognizing blacks & whites who cooperated with Reconstruction
What were the legal ways of disfranchisement? grandfather clauses, literacy test & poll taxes
What treaty ended the mexican war? the treaty of guadalupe
which was the first state to secede from the united states? south carolina?
